Awkward and Awesome Thursday

Better late than never right?

Hope everyone had a great Christmas.  We just got back from a great trip to St. Louis, hence the A&A delay.

Awkward:

  • The amount of people at the mall 2 days before Christmas.  I mean really, do people leave their shopping until Christmas Eve?  I was done with my shopping by Thanksgiving.
  • The constant stream of words like ox, zip, and dove going through my mind due to my recent Scrabble obsession.
  • The "Chuckie" doll that shows up at family gatherings.  It used to be my Grandmother's, but for whatever reason the family has held on to it.  As I opened my White Elephant present, he was staring back at me.  We tried to leave him, but someone snuck him into my dad's car.  The best part is that my dad found it while rummaging through his backseat late at night looking for an umbrella.

  • Celebrating our Colorado Christmas with Wesley the plumber and Tom the CBS news guy.  Long story short, we open gifts before heading out of town.  That night our water heater went out and needed to be replaced immediately, and the news asked to use our porch for a story about parcel theft.  Needless to say, a Christmas for the books.
Awesome:
  • My new ipad!  I'm loving it and wondering how I lived without it.  I was a skeptic for the longest time wondering why in the world I would need one.  It's great for Twitter, playing Scrabble, and for reading.
  • The Night Circus.  If you're looking for a great book that combines Harry Potter, Water for Elephants and The Hunger Games, this is it.
  • The Adele cd/dvd that I got in the white elephant gift exchange.  I love her!
  • Harry Potter DVD box set.  I got all 8 movies and can't wait to watch them all again!
  • Being able to celebrate Christmas with my extended family.  I was able to meet 3 new cousins and see everyone else that I wasn't able to see last year.
  • Finally getting a good family picture!  My mom has been trying to get a good one for probably a year now and we finally got a good one.

Five Things

Today was one of those days where I just didn't want to get out of bed.  My day got a little better once I had some coffee, which would taste so much better coming from a "Grumpy" mug.  Note to self, must find that mug.  Here are a few other things I found enjoyable on this fabulous Friday!

Getting my hair cut like this next week.  Thoughts?

These NineWest boots are perfect for a Colorado winter

Orgasm by Nars.  The best blush.  In the world.  Period.

A black and gold watch is going on my wish list.

Awkward and Awesome Thursday

I'm so excited for this week's edition of Awkward and Awesome Thursday.

Awkward:

  • My friend and I were having drinks and catching up about life.  Somehow we started talking about this guy we went to high school with that we didn't even really know.  20 minutes later who walks in?  The guy.  I was going to be awkward (cause last week I promised I would put myself in more awkward situations for the sake of my blog) and go say hi, but realized he would have absolutely no idea who I was.  You went to Mountain Vista right?  So did I.  That's a level of awkward I won't go to.
  • As my friend and I were leaving, said guy from high school and his friend were getting picked up from the restaurant/bar by his mom.  It'd be 1 thing if it was 1:00 a.m. and you needed a safe ride, but it was 9:00 p.m. and they hadn't even been drinking.  And I'm not here to judge, but seriously, one of you couldn't borrow your parent's car? Then to top it off I hear, "Thanks for picking us up." Again, not judging.
  • The other day, a certain former Colorado Avalanche captain cough Joe Sakic cough came into my place of work.  I tried to act cool about it but I mean come on, the guy is a hockey god!  Anyway, one of my coworkers asked if I could make guacamole for Joe's table.  Seriously? Absolutely! I'd love to.  Oh my gosh, never again!  I literally had to use two hands to place the bowl on his table I was shaking so bad.  I usually make conversation.  Nope, could't do it.  Then, homeboy didn't even say thanks!
  • I walked into the bank and the lady behind the counter was like, "I really like your outfit."  I said thanks.  Then she says, "I like your sweater.  I like your boots.  I love your accessories."  I say thanks again.  Then she says, "I love it all."  I look up and I ask, "What's the date?"  She tells me, then says "Well I have to go now."  Ok lady, are you that upset I didn't acknowledge your obsession with my great outfit?
  • I had a laughing fit at physical therapy the other day when my therapist hit the nerve that runs into the funny bone.  It felt like I was being tickled (which is the worst!)  Even though I'm laughing, I hate being tickled.  Then my therapist asked, "Why are you turning red? Are you ok?"  It was torture.
Awesome:
  • I mentioned "Plastic Land" which greets everyone when they enter the neighborhood.  (In middle school, it was humiliating cause we would pass it every day on the bus, but I've since learned to appreciate it.  And have also learned my father would like to pass it on to me one day. Can't handle that responsibility!).  Anyway, the other day, we received a note in our mailbox from an anonymous family telling us how much they love it and look forward to it.  My dad was thrilled and would frame the note if my mother would let him.
There are 13 various figurines like this lined op on our fence
  • Ghirardelli Peppermint bark.  This stuff is delicious and addicting.
  • Tim freaking Tebow on the People website.  You know you've made it when you're on people.com  Literally just saw he's on the website again today.  Love the guy, but this is getting outta control.
  • We did a gift exchange at work and my secret santa got me a Colorado Avalanche scarf.  It's amazing and it was such a great gift!  It's so nice when people put thought into a gift.  That's what it's all about!  I went all over the place looking for a University of Nebraska for my gift and the journey was well worth it because she loved her gift!

Fashion Friday- Neon!

I'm obsessed with neon colors right now, especially neon pink and neon yellow.  It can be used as a simple pop of color in a bag or pair of shoes, or it can make a big statement with either color blocking or a simple dress.  My favorite aspect of neon colors, it makes me look super tan! (which is saying a lot).

POPS of COLOR

STATEMENT PIECES

COLOR BLOCKING

So many different ways to wear this trend.  What's your favorite way?

Awkward and Awesome Thursday

So today's post will be rather short.  Clearly I need to put myself in some more awkward situations for the sake of my blog and my loyal readers!  I'll work on it!

Awkward:

  • Trying to cut limes with a dull knife and everyone freaking out that I was going to slice off my thumb.  It went a little something like this...

  • I wore my hair in it's natural state the other day (which is a mix of curls and waves) because I was too lazy to flat iron it.  I've never had so many compliments at work.  They called it my "sexy" hair.  When I wore it flat ironed, they all asked "What happened to your hair?"  Guess I have to give the people what they want.
  • Knowing virtually all of my Christmas gifts since I've been with my mom when she's bought them.  I don't care thought because this year I'm way more excited about the gifts I've picked out for my parents!  Giving is definitely better than receiving!
Awesome:
  • Over the weekend my good friend and I went to the Avalanche and Red Wings game.  The Avalanche won, which was very exciting.  But the best part was that I started a "Red Wings suck" chant all by myself at the end of the game.
  • Realizing my scarf is the perfect accessory for Avalanche games.  When I bought it at Forever 21 it didn't even occur to me that it was Avalanche colors.  I'm clearly off my game.
  • On Friday I get to play dress up for a charity gala.  I never get to dress up so it will be so fun.  Now I just have to figure out what to wear!
  • Leaving for St. Louis in 2 weeks.  It's been about 2 years since I've seen my extended family so I'm very excited to see them all, especially all of the new additions to the family.  I am however dreading the, "Are you dating anyone?  What are you doing with your life?" questions.
  • One of my tables leaving my $20 on an $85 check.  Thanks bunches kind sir!

Fashion Friday- Faux Fur

Winter weather has finally arrived in Colorado so it's time to break out the winter wear.  One of my favorite trends is faux fur vests (I think jackets are a little overboard).  I'll admit, I have yet to take the faux fur plunge but it's because I haven't found the perfect piece.  However, this post (and the snow on the ground) is inspiring me to continue my hunt.

How comfy and cozy do these look?!  I now understand why my friend's sister considers her faux fur pieces her "comfy clothing."  I personally choose men's sweat pants, but maybe I'll improve my lounge wear.  Never know when prince charming might come knocking.

Original post here. This is how I would do faux fur!

This is from Quiksilver.  Buy it here!

I love the different textures of the vest and blouse.

From Topshop.  Get it here.  I could live in this!

Love this look from Sydney

Sidenote:  Please don't wear real fur.  Animals are truly tortured all in the name of fashion.

Reduce. Reuse. Recycle.

Riley is learning how to recycle.
It's a work in progress.

And he looks good doing it!

Awkward and Awesome Thursday

My apologies for the very long A&A Thursday hiatus.  Life and Thanksgiving got in the way!

Awkward:
  • The route I took to Boulder today.  I hit every major street (University, Broadway, Santa Fe) and highway (I25, 36, tollway) in order to try to beat the traffic.  I literally zig zagged my way there.  And it still took me 2 hours in the snowstorm.
  • I let it slip that I know all the words to "Getting Jiggy With It."  I was forced to prove it while on a date.

  • I was playing my "Michael Jackson: The Experience" game the other day (which is all sorts of awkward) and I was out of breath after 2 songs.  Clearly I need to hit the gym.
  • I might have arthritis in my collarbone.  I'm 23 years old.  How is that possible? Getting old sucks.

Awesome:

  • Taco night tonight!  It's a rare occurrence in this household so it's kind of a big deal.
  • Old news, but a couple weeks ago I went to the Avs game and was chosen to be part of an in-game promotion for Qdoba.  These things always happen to me. Example.
  • Steak and Shake has arrived!  You're welcome people!  Why, you ask?  I filled out a comment card in Tulsa asking Steak and Shake to move out west.  Sure, 4 years later.  But still.  They're here and it will change your life!
  • Finding $20 in my car that I thought I had lost.
  • Plastic Land.  You can call us the Griswolds.  My dad puts 13 plastic holiday figurines on our fence that greets everyone as they come into the neighborhood.  The best part is blowing a fuse when I'm drying my hair after dark.
  • Last night my parents and I went to dinner and left the guy a really good tip.  He then offered to buy us dessert.  Can't say no to that!
  • Harry Potter.  'Nough said!  I'm reading the whole series again. I'm on #3.

Awkward and Awesome Thursday

I feel like I have so much to do today, but I made sure to pencil in "Blog" on my to-do list!

Awkward:

  • Having to put my blog on my "to-do" list.  I'm OCD with lists.  I've been known to make lists of lists.
  • My mother's aversion to potato chips when eating a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.  According to her "they just don't go together," but if she's eating a turkey sandwich, pass the chips.  She's the queen of "rules" when it comes to what goes together and what doesn't.
  • Last weekend I was at Dave and Buster's for a blind date.  (Luckily a friend was setting me up so she and her boyfriend were there, but nonetheless, awkward).  As I was waiting to meet him, this girls waves at me.  I looked at her with confusion, and may have said out loud, "I don't think you know me."  Ummm, yeah, it was one of my good friend's sisters that I have gone out with multiple times.  Oops!  In my defense I was very preoccupied.
  • While at Dave and Buster's we saw this guy (in very tight pants) stretching in order to get ready to play a dancing game.
  • My friend getting "hit on" literally.  This guy turned to my friend, asked her what her name was, blah blah blah.  Then 15 minutes later, he hit her on the arm to get her attention and said "Sorry for hitting on you earlier."  He hit her again and said, "now I'm really hitting on you."  The really awkward part is that he was an otherwise good looking guy.
  • The other night I was waiting on a table that was on a first date.  In the beginning, it was clearly not going well as she was on her cell phone and he was on his ipad (which had a stand and one of the roll-up keyboards).  I also caught her texting under the table like she was 15, probably telling her friends she didn't need an escape route.  Eventually things turned around for them since they stayed for 3 hours!
Awesome:
  • Laughing til you cry.  I mean I was literally crying.  Is is awkward that I was laughing that hard at my own joke?
  • J.R. Martinez.  If you don't watch Dancing with the Stars, well you should so you can see J.R.  He was in a Humvee accident while serving in Iraq, and sustained burns on 40% of his body.  He was then cast in All My Children. He is a real life hero that is so inspirational!  And a great dancer to boot!
  • H&M is officially OPEN in Denver, CO!!  I guess people started lining up last night for the grand opening.  Don't get my wrong, H&M is great, but no way am I dealing with the crowds.  I'll wait a few weeks.
  • Rick Perry forgetting the 3rd component of his economic plan during the debate last night.  I have no words other than HA HA HA!!!

Awkward and Awesome Thursday

Well lucky for you, I decided to get a life other than work so I actually have some awkward and awesome moments to share!

Awkward:

  • When I was at work the other night (during a very busy rush) the bartender asked me to open a screw-top wine bottle.  Was I able to open it?  Nope.  Did I end up wasting more time than if the bartender had just opened it himself?  Yep.  Glad I can help.
  • The many blonde moments I've been having lately like forgetting to clock out.  I didn't realize it til I got to the car so I headed back inside, but the restaurant had already closed so I had to knock on the window so someone could let me back it.  Humiliating.  I blame it on my new blonde highlights.
  • Tebowing, especially when you're trying to explain it to someone.  There really is no way to explain it other than to get down and demonstrate.
  • Setting off your car alarm in a very public parking lot.  It's ok everyone, it's my car I swear!
  • Being called "ma'am."  Please refrain from calling me ma'am until I'm at least 30.
  • Realizing you're about to run into old high school friends while in a bathroom stall.  I heard a few girls talking and instantly knew who it was and debated saying hi while still in the stall but thought that might be a little too awkward.  Saying hi at the sinks was awkward enough haha.
Awesome:
  • Red Velvet Cheesecake brownies.  They are seriously to die for.  I could probably eat the whole pan, but then we would have another awkward moment on our hands.  Get the recipe here!
  • Dressing up like my general manager.  I had to work halloween and someone came up with the idea of dressing up like our GM.  It gave me an excuse to wear jeans and a hat so I was totally on board!
  • The most delicious steak dinner!  Great food, great wine, great friends!
  • When I was downtown the other night my friend and I realized we were at different bars right across the street from one another.  It was too crazy to go say hi so we each went on the balcony and waved hi to each other!  So fun!
  • Seeing my dog passed out on my bed, snoring away!  He melts my heart!
  • My mom's baked spaghetti.  She got the recipe from my cousin-in-law and it is so freaking delicious.  I'll try to post the recipe soon!

buddha brain: take in the good

WEEK 1 Recap:

During week one of my "Buddha Brain" challenge, I tried to "be for myself" but it didn't always work out.  There were many instances where I did what I wanted to do, and said no when I didn't want to do something.  However, it's difficult sometimes to get out of certain situations.

For instance, on Saturday night, (after working a busy night) I met up with some friends.  I was exhausted and just not in the mood to deal with the madness that was downtown Denver.  However, I had said I would go.  I wanted to leave before the bars closed because I knew things would get crazy (and boy did they) but I didn't feel comfortable walking 8 blocks to my car on Halloween weekend so I ended up staying out much longer than I would have liked.  In retrospect, I should have called a cab to take me to my car, but hindsight is 20/20.  And since I didn't get out of the city early enough, I witnessed a very disturbing incident that left me very upset.

Long story short, a fight broke out near LoDo's downtown.  I saw it going on, so I ran down the street to get out of the way.  Unfortunately, I didn't go far enough and ended up getting pushed by one of the guys.  He then proceeded to sucker-punch an innocent guy who was just sitting in his car with the window down.  He knocked him square in the face and I definitely heard bones cracking, before getting the heck out of there.  Needless to say, I should have "been for myself" and then I could have avoided the situation, but you live and learn, which leads me to week 2.

WEEK 2 Challenge: Take in the Good.

Essentially this just means rather than reflect and dwell on every negative event like we so often do, be mindful of the good ones.  Our brains react more to a negative stimulus that an equally intense positive one so we much change the way our brain reacts to positive stimuli.  By taking in the good, and visualizing it sinking into you you can change the makeup of your brain and how you react to positive experiences. Like Rick Hanson writes, " It's like sitting down to a meal- don't just look at it, taste it.

Also, be aware of any reluctance you have to a positive event such as thinking you don't deserve it, or feeling guilty for feeling happiness.  Let yourself experience positive events and feel good about them.

Over the weekend I was so concerned about being out too late, and how crazy downtown was that I didn't take time to enjoy the good parts like all the great costumes and being with friends.

Awkward and Awesome Thursday

I'm back with another installment of A & A Thursday!

Awkward:
  • While I was working on Sunday, I had a table that would not leave.  I walked by A LOT and each time removed something from their table like drink glasses, etc.  It got really awkward when a sob fest ensued, but I kept walking by.  Pay your darn bill!
  • This week my mom asked me to return a carpet sample.  I had a general idea where to go, and then saw a sign.  When I walked in there was no one to be found, until a guy saw me through the window.  "You're looking for the showroom, which is at the end of the parking lot."  Yup, definitely walked into the warehouse.
  • Getting physical therapy on my jaw.  I have pain in my collar bone and we've tried everything, and then my physical therapist decided my popping jaw was causing misalignment.  Then he proceeds to tell me about the time someone worked on his saw and it was totally moved out of the socket.  Thanks for the reassurance buddy.
  • Getting a call from one of my Breckenridge accounts nearly a month after the fact.  I just called to say bye and thanks for everything at the end of September.  Well yesterday she decided to return my call.  Random!
  • The other night this guy texted me and asked what I was up to.  In all honestly, I was hanging out at home catching up on my DVR with my mom, but not wanting to sound like a total loser I said I was "hanging out with friends."  Then he goes on to say, "Don't lie.  You know you don't have any friends."  I of course didn't tell me he caught me in my white lie, but how rude was that?  Excuse me, what would lead you to that conclusion, joking or not?
Awesome:
  • Lazy, yet productive days.  Yesterday I prepared for 13 inches of snow so didn't have anything planned other than lounging around watching Phantom of the Opera."  I also did 3 loads of laundry, baked banana muffins, and cleaned my room.
  • The Colbert Report.  Just started watching it within recent weeks and he literally makes me laugh out loud.
  • I took my dog Riley to Petsmart to get a new dog tag.  If you know my dog, you know he's quite the handful and jumps on people a lot.  Well, as I was getting his tag, he jumped on a girl that worked at Petsmart.   A lot of people are annoyed my his shenanigans, but she said "Aw, how did you know I needed a hug?"  That's exactly how I feel about my boy!
  • Getting to break out my Lady Gaga costume again this weekend!  I have to work all weekend, but really hoping to go out Saturday night cause baby I was born this way!
  • EOS lip balm.  I usually don't like lip balm, but this stuff is amazing!  The best part about it, is that it's made in the USA.  How many products can say that these days?  You can find it at Target.

buddha brain: be for yourself

So it's week one of my 52-week mission to developing a "buddha brain" using the book "Just One Thing" by Rick Hanson.  There are 52 simple practices, so each week I hope to focus on one and recap it before starting the next practice.  It's broken down into 5 parts and the first part is "Be Good to Yourself" and the first practice is BE FOR YOURSELF.

The basic premise of this is to look out for yourself, and wish yourself well.  It can be very easy for us to put ourself and our happiness on the back burner in order to please those around us, but how can we help others if we can't first help ourselves?

The best way to "be for yourself" is to ask yourself, am I on my own side?  Am I looking out for my best interests?  A few months ago I wrote a post about not being able to say no.  By learning how to say no, I am looking out for my best interests.  Another way to be for yourself is knowing you should be doing something for your own benefit, but not doing it like finding a new job or kicking a bad relationship to the curb.

This week I am going to be aware of my happiness and my feelings, and do what I can to look out for myself.  I'm going to assert myself if need be, and say no if I don't feel like doing something.  This may sound selfish, but it's not.  Like I said, in order to help others, you have to be able to help yourself.

Awkward and Awesome Thursday

My apologies for being MIA last week.  Last week was super hectic as I was managing a bathroom remodel while my parent's house and starting a new part-time job.  But anyway, I'm back.

Awkward:

  • Bowling.  I went bowling a couple times and it's just awkward, especially in a "date" type setting.  "It's your turn, k my turn, your turn."  Back and forth, back and forth.  Oh, and let's not talk about the view everyone gets as you go up to bowl.
  • Starting a new job.  I literally feel like I'm walking around like a lost puppy dog.  I don't know anyone, I don't know where I'm going, what I'm doing.  And then, you have to follow someone to "learn the ropes."  Then, even more awkward is when they follow you to make sure you know what you're doing.  Luckily, I've made it through the training and now ready to fly solo this week!
  • Forgetting one of my good friend's birthday (and having her tell me I forgot it).  Oops! Luckily she forgot my birthday too, so now we're even.
  • Running out of the garage because I didn't have the garage door opener.  Our garage has a motion sensor so I had to get out while not triggering it, all while in heels.  It was a quite a show, that some stranger on the street got to enjoy.
  • Wrinkles!  Yes, I have under eye wrinkles and I'm only 23.  Wear your sunnies people!
  • This article from Fox 31.  Are people really this ignorant about hockey?
  • Being home alone at night while my parents were out of town.

Awesome:
  • The Avalanche are off to a great start.  Many people picked the Avs to finish last in the league.  The season is still young, but so far they are 5-1, which is better than anyone expected at this point!
  • Book stores.  I went to Tattered Cover the other day and just walked around for hours.  I like to use the library for books because it's cheaper, and it's the "green" alternative to book stores, but I like going to book stores to see which books to add to my ever expanding list of "books to read."
  • The Fray's new single, Heartbeat.  They are my favorite band.  If you haven't seen them live, DO IT! They're incredible.

  • I made $200 on ebay selling a few things!  Money in the bank!!
  • While I was at Tattered Cover, I picked up a book called "Just One Thing: Developing a Buddha Brain One Simple Practice at a Time."  For some Buddhism is a religion, but I also look at it as a way of life.  And this book is a way for us all to adopt some of their practices like being good to yourself, finding strength, being patient, etc.  There are 52 practices in the book so I plan on focusing on one per week.  The plan is to blog about each one.  (We'll see if that happens, but I'm going to try my best).
  • Another book I really like is "Why Men Love Bitches."  I bought it awhile back, but started reading it again.  The word bitch is used in a "tongue in cheek" sort of way and just tells women to be strong and independent, and stick up for yourself!
  • Libyan dictator Moammar Gadhafi is dead.  This is such a historic moment for the people of Libya, and the world.

Fashion Friday-Ponchos

Sorry for the "Fashion Friday" hiatus!  But I'm back and my favorite trend of the moment is PONCHOS, especially ones with a tribal or navajo print.  You can dress them up or down depending on the occasion or the weather.  With the right accessories they are so chic, but so incredibly comfortable!

I bought this at Forever 21 and look forward to wearing it tomorrow in the cold weather!

The black pants and booties dress this up and make it so chic!

I love this print!

This looks so cozy and comfortable, yet more put together than a hoodie and jeans.

The animal print boots bring this look to another level!

Another poncho from Forever 21 but with more color and interest.

Ponchos are definitely "in" right now, but it's a trend that you love or hate.
What are your thoughts on ponchos?

Awkward and Awesome Thursday

Finally settled into life back at Casa de J (aka my parents' house) and here with another installment of Awkward and Awesome Thursday.

Awkward:

  • Telling people I quit my job and moved in with my parents.  You're living at home?  But what are you going to do?  Oh ya know, I just thought I'd mooch off the J's for awhile til they kick me out.  I moved back home to pursue other opportunities like my master's degree.
  • Snooki wannabe at Hacienda.  If I was in downtown Denver at a club this wouldn't be so awkward, but I was at a restaurant in Lone Tree.
  • My friend and I went to Noodles and Co. for her birthday (we do it big) and she gave them her coupon for a free noodle bowl of your birthday.  She also ordered flatbread, which they don't give you on your birthday (what cheapos).  Anyway, she owed $0.80 so she handed over her debit card.  "You can't use a card for anything under $1."  My friend is like, "Oh, I think I have a quarter.  Wait, no never mind."  "Oh that's ok, don't worry about it."  Take that Noodles and Co! We just took you for 80 cents, what now!
  • After our Noodles, we went to Old Chicago for some celebratory beverages.  I start talking to the bartender (who we happen to know) and I'm trying to be discreet about the conversation we're having.  Out of nowhere, this dude a few seats away interjects into the conversation.  I'm sorry sir, I'm not talking to you.
  • Seeing a guy from my 8th grade class that I literally haven't seen since the 8th grade.  He was one of the most popular kids so naturally I knew exactly who he was, but I tried to play it off like "Didn't you go to MRMS?"  And he goes yeah, I thought your looked familiar.  What's your name?  Yeah right I look familiar, you're probably just being nice.  Whatever.
Awesome:
  • Mac MatchMaster foundation.  I just bought it a couple days ago and so far, I love it!  Highly recommend it, and definitely worth the money.
  • Getting accepted to graduate school.  I got into the CU Denver Masters of Management program and would like to get a specialization in sustainability.  I also landed a part-time job!
  • The Avs season starts Saturday!  And they're retiring Forsberg's number.  When Sakic retired, I maybe got a little misty-eyed.  I think I'll be alright with Forsberg since he hasn't really played in years.
  • Being able to celebrate my friend's 25th birthday with her.  Wouldn't have been able to do that if I was still in the  mountains.  Friend, I love you and don't worry about being halfway to 50.  Life happens the way it's supposed to and I know that the universe has something amazing planned for you!

Awkward and Awesome Thursday

My Awkward list is a bit short this week.  Clearly that means I've had no social life lately and I need to get out more.  Probably not going to happen anytime soon since I'm moving back in with my parents.  Hopefully they can bring me some awkward moments!

Awkward:
  • Pink escalades.  I saw one cruising around Breckenridge the other day.  Clearly those people don't live up here.  And seriously, baby pink cars should only be available in a hot wheels model for 5 year olds, which reminds me, I always wanted a hot wheels car but I never got one.
  • Hitting myself in the face with the sun visor in my car.  I was trying to put it back up and it somehow came unhinged and knocked me in the face.  Luckily no one was around to see that gem.
  • I was going through my phone deleting numbers cause clearly that's more fun than packing, (procrastination at its finest) when I came across a few names that I don't remember for the life of me. So tempted to be like, Hey there, who are you and why are you in my phone?  But that would just be a whole different level of awkward.
  • The amount of black and white shirts I have in my closet.  I mean, seriously, it's like I'm constantly in a 1950s black and white sitcom.  Lucy, you've got some 'splainin to do!
  • Speedos.  Who wants to see that first thing in the morning?  I sure don't.  Which brings me to one piece bathing suits.  But I guess it would be even more ridiculous if I showed up in an itsy, bitsy, teeny, weeny, yellow polka dot bikini to do my laps.
Awesome:
  • On the way from Frisco to Breckenridge, there is a field with a few horses just hanging out and one adorable donkey.  He's like a real life Eeyore, just chilling all by himself.  He always looks kinda sad, but he's so cute and just makes me smile every time I see him.
  • I bought this jewelry organizer and ohmygosh!  I love it.  I'm obsessed.
  • Having no second thoughts about moving back to Denver this weekend.  I'm the type of person that can't make decisions and typically second guesses my decisions, but I'm and 100% sure I'm making the right choice to move back home.  Time to pursue other opportunities and couldn't be happier about it!  Sure, I'll miss my friends here, but I'm a Denver girl!
  • Fall colors in the mountains.  If you've never been to the mountains when the leaves are changing, it's a must! I've never seen colors so vibrant!
  • Red lips!  I decided to rock red lips the other day, which I've never actually done in public. It was so liberating!  I'll post a picture the next time I do it!
  • Pringles!  They're not lying.  Once you pop, you can't stop!

Awkward and Awesome Thursday

This week has been dragging on, but Thursday is finally here!  I know you're just as excited as I am for Awkward and Awesome Thursday!

Awkward:

  • Going to Target 3 times in one week.  By the third time I felt like I needed a disguise.  That girl's here again?  Wasn't she here like 2 days ago?  When you live in a relatively small city there aren't a lot of shopping options.  The really sad part is that I could have gone a fourth time, but I went to Walgreens instead.
  • I'm not here to judge, but there's this woman at the gym that I will never understand.  She comes in full makeup, her hair flat ironed and down, perfume that I can smell when she walks by, and spandex volleyball-type shorts.  I'm personally at the gym to get my sweat on so I'm not gonna waste makeup and a good hair day.  And the other thing is, homegirl is usually there with her husband, so I don't think she's there to pick up guys.  I'll never get it.
  • My apartment.  It's been my humble abode for the past year and I'll miss the cozy feel it has, but if I never live in a studio apartment again I'll be a happy girl.  I sleep in my kitchen and I cook in my bedroom.
  • Wearing jean shorts to the gym.  Who guy does that?  And actually, what guy still has jean shorts?
  • Panicking when I wasn't able to hook up my DVR to my tv.  Long story short, my apartment came furnished, but a lot of it stayed with my parents.  When my parents came to visit they brought the tv that came with the place.  Well, the tv is sorta old so it didn't have a hookup for the HDMI cord for DVR.  I thought I was going to have to go 2 weeks without DVR.  Which is a problem because how am I supposed to watch Grey's Anatomy and Project Runway at the same time? That's what you call a "First world problem."  But not to fear, I'm ready to go for tonight.  Cause I know you were worried.
Awesome:
  • Baby Nina!  My cousin had her second daughter last week.  So now she has Norah and Nina.  Isn't that the cutest name combo ever?  Nina is my 10th second cousin on my dad's side of the family.  I think.  So hard to keep track!
  • Moving to Denver.  If you haven't heard, I'm moving back to Denver at the end of this month.  I did a year in the mountains and it was a wonderful experience, but 9 months of winter is too much for me.  And I want to pursue other things.  Like dating a guy who has a car!  And a steady job!  Dreaming big people!
  • Goodreads.com  I love it because you create an account and you make 3 lists.  "Read," "To-read," and "Reading."  I don't know about you, but I have so many books I want to read, but it's hard to remember them all so this way it's all in one place.  And you can also see reviews of books.
  • While I was watching the Emmy's I saw a commercial for Dunkin' Donuts.  Sometimes this means they are preparing you for the announcement that they are opening locations in Denver.  That's what H&M has been doing.  Please, please, please!  They have great coffee!
  • I found a new favorite blog, Dulce Candy.  Her closet is every girl's dream!  It's probably bigger than my apartment.

Kara's Kooking - Arroz Cubano

I had arroz cubano, which translates to Spanish Rice, when I was studying abroad in Spain.  Every Friday (when her grandchildren came over) we had this dish.  This was fine by me because it was delicious!  In Spain, they have a sauce called "Tomate Frito"(translation: fried tomato), and unfortunately there isn't anything similar here in the States.  It was so good my roommate and I contemplated drinking it!  Anyway, when I miss Spain, I make my own version of Arroz Cubano.  It's definitely a dish that sounds weird, but don't knock it til you try it.

All you need is a medium grain rice, 1 egg, and plain tomato sauce.

Cook the rice according to the package.  Fry up an egg.  Put the rice and egg in a bowl.  Pour tomato sauce on top.  Voila!

Makeup Storage

So I know I said I probably wouldn't do many "makeup" posts, but I saw this on Pinterest a few weeks back and finally decided to give it a try.  And it's not really a makeup post; its a makeup brush post.

I went to Target and bought a similar glass case, but bit shorter, and filled it with these tiny pebbles.  It looks super cute, and it will keep my brushes so much nicer!  The whole thing cost me like $6 cause I only needed one vase and one thing of pebbles.

One other thing, if you're in the market for makeup brushes, I definitely recommend Sonia Kashuk.  You can find it at Target and it's fairly reasonable!

I'm Smokin'

So I wish my MacBook took clearer pictures so you could get the full effect, but I tried a new smoky eye today.   I saw a video of Heidi Klum getting the "Kim Kardashian smoky eye" and thought I would try it for myself.
The eyeshadow palette I used was Maybelline Stylish Smokes-Natural Smokes.  I stick to pretty neutral palettes just because its what I like.  (I also love Stylish Smokes- Plum Smokes and Charcoal Smokes).  The best part about the Maybelline palette is it tells you what color goes where.  I also picked up a couple of new brushes.  I got an Eyeshadow C Brush, a smudge brush, and a contour brush.  They really made the application so much easier!
The video just kind of helped me improve my technique, and to blend it better.
For the rets of my face I use Bare Minerals powder in Light, Bare Minerals face color in Warmth, and Bare Minerals blush in Hint.  I set everything with the Bare Minerals mineral veil.
My lip gloss is NYC Lim Plumper in Peach Parfait.

I probably won't do too many make-up posts cause it is basically the same every day, but wanted to share the video with you and show you how it come together for me!

Fashion Friday - Brown Riding Boots

I'm still not sure if riding boots are a super specific style, but either way I'm going with it.  We can also call them knee high boots if that's more your style.  Anyway, brown boots have been on my "fashion-must-have" list for awhile now, but couldn't find the right ones.  Well, this week I found them!

They are Unity by Carlos Santana and I found them at Famous Footwear.  You can also find them here, but they're more expensive.
Anyway, I love the color and the buckle detailing.  They're also a bit slouchy so they fit well over skinny jeans.
Sydney over at The Daybook Blog inspired me to get brown boots after seeing her pair them with black.  I was always anti-brown/black mixing, until I saw her doing it.  I guess that makes me a follower, but oh well!
Yesterday I wore my new boots with, wait for it, BLACK leggings!  And I loved it.  And today's outfit includes some black and these boots.  I'm a new person!
Anywho, here are some inspiration looks for you if you were scared like me about pairing brown boots with black!

I have all the pieces to make this come to life!

I love olive green!

Great casual outfit for winter!

Great colors for fall!

I love all of the layering!

In other news, I will be moving back to Denver at the end of this month to hopefully pursue my Master's degree.  Cheers to new adventures, including pairing brown and black!

Awkward and Awesome Thursday

So first of all, sorry I've been M.I.A. lately.  I have been crazy busy with work. I wasn't even going to do Awkward and Awesome Thursday, but luckily I have people that hold me accountable!  So here we go!

Awkward:

  • Broncos fans planning to buy Pro-Tebow billboards in Denver.  I guess it will cost about $10,000 and it probably won't do anything.  News flash, John Fox is the coach, Kyle Orton is the quarterback whether you like it or not.  Deal with it.
  • Girls creeping the Facebook pages of Rockies players' wives, then posting links to some of the Facebook photo albums on Twitter.  That's creeping on a whole other level!
  • Chili beer.  The other day my friends and I went to the Dillon Dam Brewery because it was "Chili Beer Day" and they only have 1 keg of it.  I know some people love chili beer, but it was just weird.  For the first second it tasted good, then it burned the back of my throat.  I'll stick to Coors Light thank you very much.
  • My company hosted a golf tournament on Friday and I met a lot of cool people, one that I had recognized from previous events.  Well later that night I was working a promo when I saw the same guy.  Naturally I said hi, blah blah blah. On Monday, I went to another golf tournament and saw the guy from the tournament on Friday.  Yeah, definitely was NOT the same guy I saw Friday night.  Wow, I feel like such a weirdo now.
  • Noticing a guy's fly is down and not knowing whether to say anything.  I had just met the guy like 2 days prior and didn't feel like we were on the level that I could tell him his fly was down.  Later, another guy we were with told him, and then I had to admit that I had known too.  Awkward!

Awesome:
  • Playing in my very first golf tournament!  Monday morning I got a call from my boss saying he needed me to play in one of my account's golf tournament.  I was pretty nervous since I'd never played in one, but it was a lot of fun!  I'll take golf over work any day!
  • Avalanche training camp starts this week.  I won't be going cause it will be chaos, but it means that Avs season is right around the corner!
  • My new Burton vest!  I was at the consignment store with the goal of getting a check for some items I had sold, but then I saw this vest and it spoke to me!  So now I have $0.41 credit at the store.  Whoops!
  • The Big Bang Theory.  I literally laugh out loud during every episode!
  • My very first Powerball ticket!  The best part, I didn't pay for it.  It was part of the golf tournament.  I was pretty convinced I was going to win so I started imagining what I would do with $25 million.  New house, Range Rover, shopping spree, start a foundation...  But yeah, I didn't win.  What a let down.  No more lotto tickets for me.

Awkward and Awesome Thursday

Ready for another installment of Awkward and Awesome Thursday?!

Awkward:

  • Being chosen to be a part of a Colorado Rockies in-game promotion.  I tweeted my seat location to the Rockies and they chose me.  I had no idea what I would be doing.  My first thought was, "ooh maybe I'll get to run across the field and change out 2nd base."  To which my loving father responded, "You better hope that's not it.  You're not the fastest."  Thanks Dad!  It was awkward because they whole game I kept turning around to see if they were coming to get me.  The people behind me must have thought I was crazy.  Then they knew I was crazy after the people came and got me because as I walked up the stairs with them, I tripped.  Yup, tripped up the stairs.  Smooth!  Finally, they decided to tell me the answers beforehand.  Great, right?  No, cause I answered the questions WAY too fast.  Apparently I didn't even let her finish asking one of the questions.  Oops!

  • Wandering aimlessly at Target.  I was literally walking in circles trying to find a fish bowl, a hula hoop, and a yardstick.  None of which they had at Target.  So, to make it more awkward I had to go to Walmart.  I didn't have a choice though because this was for work, and it wasn't my money.  My personal Walmart boycott is alive and well.
  • Multi-lane round-abouts.  I mean seriously, which lane goes where?  Never fails, I always end up cutting someone off!  Sorry I'm an idiot with round-abouts.
  • Dealing with work email on your day off.  It was such a personal conflict.  Should I answer the email?  But it's my day off?  Yeah, but it will take like 15 minutes.  I answered the email.
  • Twitter fights.  I've only been involved in one it was was pretty intense.  But the other day I saw this guy tweet an athlete something really rude.  Well, said athlete responded with an equally rude and immature comment.  Why even go to that level?  Cringe worthy.
Awesome:

  • Being chosen for the Rockies promo.  I won a flip cam, which was something I had sorta been wanting.  And I had people recognize me on the jumbotron.  A guy my dad works with called my dad to tell him.  (In retrospect that's kinda awkward).
  • 3 Rockies games this season, 3 wins!!  I guess I bring good vibes.
  • Nutella.  Haven't bought it it months because it's so good, but I fell victim to the promotional display.  As a marketing major I should know better!
  • Pumpkin spice lattes.  They are delicious and they signal the start of fall!
  • Fall weather.  I love curling up with a blanket and hot tea.
  • Long weekends that turn into short work weeks!  I mean seriously, it's already Thursday!!
  • Adele, Someone Like You.  I already liked this song, but when she performed at the VMAs?  Amazing!  You could feel her emotion.  And I realized it's a song that almost every girl can relate to in some way.  For me, it's like she put the words into my mouth regarding someone I dated a couple years ago.

Fashion Friday- Boyfriend Blazers

So before we begin talking about fashion, I need to have a diva moment.  This morning I went to this great local coffee shop in Frisco.  Ordered my usual, large, iced vanilla latte with skim milk.  Yeah, definitely not skim milk.  Disappointing, but oh well.  Ok, enough of that!

Today we're talking about boyfriends, boyfriend blazers that is!  Some of you might find your boyfriend to me a great fashion accessory, but not me!  Give me a blazer and I'm good to go!  Blazers have become my go-to fashion piece.  As you know, Kim Kardashian is a fashion inspiration for me, so and she rocks blazers all the time.  It's so easy to replicate.  They also make you look so put together with very little effort.  Finally, they're great for layering once it starts getting cooler.  Sorry for the picture overload, but I love boyfriend blazers!!!

This was for a photo shoot with my dear friend Jacquelyn. Check her out!!
Blazer, shoes, tank:Target; Necklace, skirt:F21

Blazer with leggings (in Central Park nonetheless!)

It's safe to say I've worn an outfit very similar to this.  And those boots...to die!!

Boyfriend blazer with boyfriend jeans.  So simple, yet so classy.

A striped blazer is on my wish list for fall!

Love Kourtney's outfit, especially the animal print.

I would wear this for traveling.

Do you like boyfriend blazers?  Do you think it's a trend that is here to stay?  I sure hope so!
Now off to enjoy the last weekend of summer.  Happy Labor Day everyone!!
